Conclave is a 2024 political thriller directed by Edward Berger, based on the 2016 novel by Robert Harris.
After the death of the sitting pope, cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is forced to put grief aside and organise a conclave to decide upon a successor. Surrounded by powerful religious leaders in the halls of the Vatican, he is tasked with investigating the major candidates to ascertain their suitability for the role. Before long, he uncovers a trail of deep secrets that could shake the very foundation of the Roman Catholic Church.
Fiennes makes for a compelling and unknowable detective and director Edward Berger draws excellent performances from a wonderfully imperious John Lithgow and a spiralling Stanley Tucci. Isabella Rossellini shines as an observant nun who’s so fun to watch in her handful of scenes, that you wish she had a few more.
An unmissable thriller with a sharp twist in the tale!
