The Country Girls by Edna O’Brien
First published in 1960, the novel was banned in O’Brien’s native Ireland for its frank and candid portrayal of female desire, sexuality and independence, subjects that were not discussed in the conservative and Catholic society of Ireland at the time. Since then, it has gained recognition as an essential and groundbreaking work.
