Afternoon Classics is a series of matinees brought to you in association with Southern Befrienders. Come and enjoy a classic movie, followed by free tea & biscuits and the opportunity for a friendly chat.
Filmed during WW2, Brief Encounter is a 1945 masterpiece of romantic cinema, directed by David Lean and based on a play by Noel Coward. Laura Jesson (Celia Johnson) and Dr. Alec Harvey (Trevor Howard) spend each Thursday in Milford – Laura running her shopping errands and catching a movie, and Alec doing rounds at the hospital, before each boards a train at the end of the afternoon. One day, a speck of dust leads to a chance meeting in the tea room…..
Brief Encounter has been called ‘the most romantic movie ever made’. Its central struggle – the pull of unconsummated love, of yearning between two people putting responsibility before happiness, has become the template for some of the greatest romantic stories committed to the big screen.
Free tea and biscuits will be served in EAC Harry’s Bar after the film.
Please contact Southern Befrienders on 01624 833025 if you are in the south of the Island and require transport to and from the event.
