Holy Cow is director and part-time farmer, Louise Courvoisier’s enchanting feature debut about a teenager from a struggling family of cheese makers in the remote French region of Jura.
18-year-old Totone spends most of his time drinking beer and partying with friends until harsh reality catches up with him. Obliged to make a living and take care of his 7-year-old sister, he sets out to make the best Comté cheese in the region, in an attempt to win a competition gold medal and 30,000 euro prize.
Newcomer Clément Faveau (a poultry farmer in real-life) gives a subtle, yet complex performance as Totone and Maïwene Barthelemy is terrific as a teenage dairy farmer that he falls for, in this vivacious, coming-of -age tale of solidarity in rural life.
Warm hearted in all the best ways, this is an unassuming triumph.
