Young Singer of Mann 2024 Terms & Conditions

The Competition is open to all young singers living on the Isle of Man, who are between the ages of 7 and 18 on or before 27th January 2024. Competitors will be divided into Junior (7-12yrs) and Senior (13-18yrs) classes. Equal titles and prize money will be awarded in both classes. Please note – any singer under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Adjudicators: Angela Stewart (Chair), Jane Corkill, Christy DeHaven, Jack Divers.

The official accompanist is Madeline Kelly. At least one of each singer’s two songs MUST be accompanied and singers can only be accompanied by Madeline. Competitors are asked to contact Madeline BY TEXT on 07624 465168 to arrange a time, date & payment for their rehearsal.

Competition:

The Juniors event will take place on Saturday 27th January at 2pm, and the Seniors on Sunday 28th January at 2pm. This year’s competitions will take place over a single round on each day, after which the adjudicators will pick a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each class. The order of performance will be chosen by draw on the day of the competition, and competitors will be notified of the order on their arrival at the EAC.

Prizes:

The winners of both the Junior and Senior competitions will receive a £150 cash prize, the Young Singer or Junior Singer of Mann trophy (which they hold until the next competition), and an additional trophy which they keep. All trophies are kindly provided by the IOM Arts Council.

The singers who take 2nd place will each be awarded a £100 cash prize. The singers who take 3rd place will each be awarded a £50 cash prize. All cash prizes are kindly provided by The Malcolm Dickinson Trust. All performers will receive a Young Singer of Mann certificate.

Regulations:

Competitors must sing from memory. Each singer will perform two contrasting songs, one of which MAY be unaccompanied. All genres are welcome and we ask that you don’t exceed 8 minutes total. All performers must use the official accompanist and arrange/pay for their own rehearsal. Competitors are asked to provide an original purchased copy of their music for use by the adjudicators, as well as another copy for the accompanist which should be sent in with the application form. The adjudicators’ copy will only be required on the day of the competition and both copies will be returned. Please ensure that each song is clearly marked with the competitor’s name.

The adjudicators will be looking for the following qualities from competitors:

Musicality: Musical sensitivity and expressive power, plus the ability to interpret a song with an appropriate sense of stvle

Performance: The way in which the competitor communicates their performance – how they stand, sit or interact with the audience.
