Lionel Tertis International Viola Festival

Lionel Tertis

Lionel Tertis, the greatest viola player of the 20th century, died in February 1975, at the age of 98. A fund was set up with the primary objective of establishing an international Viola Festival to commemorate the work that he undertook for that instrument throughout his long and active life.

Such a competition would provide a unique incentive to the growing number of viola players all over the world who wish to pursue a solo or chamber music career. So the Lionel Tertis International Viola Festival & Competition was born.

This triennial event is now well-established and known throughout the musical world. Players of all nationalities are invited to take part in the competition, workshops and masterclasses which attract participants from all over the world. The event is administered by the Erin Arts Centre with funding from the Lionel Tertis Foundation and the Isle of Man Arts Council

The 13th Lionel Tertis International Viola Festival & Competition will be held from 6th to 13th April 2019 and is open to all nationalities not more than 30 years of age on 6th April 2019. Entries for the competition have now closed with over 100 entries from 28 countries and the judges will now watch their DVDs and select the 40 competitors to take part in the next stage in April 2019.

The test piece entitled Canto for List D is now available as a download from Edition Peters Group. Please read the competition booklet for restrictions for its use. Any competitor breaking these restrictions will be banned from the competition.

Performance notes from the Composer, Roxanna Panufnik
As the title Canto suggests, the slower sections of this piece are to played in an almost “improvisational” way – putting as much of your own interpretation as you wish. This is a new and as yet untested work so if you come across any ambiguities please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me via John Bethell information@erinartscentre.com.

The competition booklet can still be downloaded in pdf format by clicking the link below if any competitor wishes to review the conditions of the competition. You will need Adobe Reader to view it. The workshop application will be available for download when the second stage competitors are known. Unsuccessful competitors may attend the workshops.
