Uzerche International Festival 2010
Uzerche, Corrèze, France
20th to 24th August
''An original and eclectic programme''
La Montagne, Centre France
The third annual international festival of music in this famous medieval hill-top town midway between Limoges to the north and Brive-la-Gaillarde to the south.
Uzerche, known as 'The Pearl of the Limousin' is one of the most historic smaller towns in the Limousin. It's a town where the arts come high on the list of priorities; its mayor, Sophie Dessus, being a Vice President of the Conseil Général de la Corrèze for culture.
For six days in the middle of August, Uzerche comes alive with the sound of music. From a sung mass to classical music from Bengal, Hansel and Gretel, Humperdinck's evergreen opera, to Clément Noël, one of France's most talented oboists, a piano recital by the dynamic, young Scottish pianist, Christopher Baxter, an opera gala to exhibitions and a festival dinner at the Hôtel Ambroise.
Artistic Director, John Bethell MBE, of Isle of Man Erin Arts Centre fame, has devised a programme that oozes accessibility and cultural excellence. Three local venues form the musical hub for this year's Uzerche Festival, namely the historically magnificent, Abbatiale Saint-Pierre, home to a former Benedictine monastery and, today, the town's abbey church, the Cinéma Louis Jouvet, named after one of France's most distinguished film actors, and the Salle Polyvalente on the other side of the Vézère river at Sainte-Eulalie. Three exhibitions – Calcutta, the Grimm Brothers complement watercolours by Isle of Man artist, Marjorie Thorne-Cringle, and local photographer, Nicolas Lenfant, featured artist in the Isle of Man 2008 Mananan International Festival.
