Described
by Artistic Director Craig Ogden as "a new and
unique event in the guitar calendar", the Guitarists' Retreat
on Mann is essentially a study course for individual guitarists, ensembles
or chamber groups wishing to spend four days in intensive study. The
Guitarists' Retreat differs from a conventional festival in as much
that the core component of the course is the provision of individual
practice time of three to four hours a day. The aim of the course is to provide an opportunity for guitarists
such as students or young professionals to practice intensively over
a period of four days in a structured environment. All aspects of good
playing are focused on, including physical well-being, performance
psychology, relaxation and sight-reading as well as technique and interpretation.
The
main features of the course include occasional tutorial supervision during
practice times, formal private lessons, performance opportunities, yoga,
recreation and public recitals. Also during practice times, tutorial
staff drop in on course members to informally supervise progress and
to offer advice.
