Mananan Festival 1979

"Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra" commissioned for the 1978 International Double Bass Competition and Workshop. First performed on October 15, 1978 in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, by the Competition winner, Jirí Hudec, with the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas.
"Rondel for solo Viola" commissioned for the sixth Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition 1997.

During the first International Double Bass Competition and Workshop, August 1978, John Bethell conducted 'The Elephant' from Saint-Saëns' 'Carnival of the Animals' played by 48 double bass players on the Lower Promenade, Port Erin. The occasion was filmed for a BBC2 documentary, 'The Great Double Bass Race'.
